"The Season of Perpetual Hope"

May is a month of infinite possibilities, a season of perpetual hope. It's still early enough in the year that nothing is really off the table, and it feels like the whole dang universe is working in our favor. With the sun up so much earlier, getting out of bed is way easier, and for those of us with young kids, spring sports are winding down and summer fun has not yet begun. All that extra real estate on our calendars means our options open up. You can race, you can NOT race, you can rejoin your favorite long run group, your favorite track workout group, you can meet your morning coffee run buddies again, or your 5:30am OrangeTheory class… the possibilities are endless!!!

As for racing, I’ve always said it’s a fun thing to do when you are ready to do it. If you have a fall marathon on the calendar, and you want it to be fun, it’s time to start locking in. You need to start nailing the long run sandwich this month. We need to make sure we are nailing at least 4 runs per week (next month it for up to 5!) and adding strength and self-care (foam rolling! Epsom salt baths! Sauna days!) back into the schedule. You aren’t selfish, the marathon is. This is what it requires- all the work, and all the recovery. (There is no such thing as too much recovery!!!!).

Remember, after 2 good months in Maintain you can YOLO a half whenever you like. We only need LONG LONG plans when we don't keep a solid base, and we proletariat runners don't need HM-specific workouts, ever. Fitness isn't greedy, the marathon is!

You can do all of the things, or none of the things. Nothing is always a valid choice!!!! More than anything I want you to listen to your body. Give it what it needs now, and everything will be easier when things get harder, when the August heat boils you alive and kids come home from camp and fall sports start and sunrise creeps back towards 6:45 instead of 5:45am.

Go get excited!!!!! And if you can’t, then sign up for Office Hours. I got enough excitement for all of us!! It May Be, the best year yet, Baby.
